From the very beginning of its work Johannes Rau International Centre for Education and Exchange (IBB Minsk) has conducted a number of educational programs aimed at improvement of Belarusian journalists’ professional skills in order to contribute to development of independent journalism in Belarus. The Media Academy under the Centre has carried out a wide range of activities both for young and qualified journalists: educational seminars, meetings of Journalists’ Club, cycles of workshops focused on concrete topics, educational trips both for Belarusian journalists abroad and for foreign journalists to Belarus.

An important component of these activities is development of a dialog between Belarusian and foreign journalists, as well as between Belarusian state and independent mass media. Hundreds of journalists have taken part in the Centre’s educational programs recently.

Specialists in the sphere of ecology, economics, law, representatives of ministries, high-qualified foreign and Belarusian journalists have participated in seminars and workshops organized by the Media Academy as invited experts.

The Media Academy of IBB Minsk has actively cooperated with educational institutions carrying out preparation of journalists, journalistic organizations, Belarusian and foreign mass media. The Media Academy gives experienced journalists a possibility for further improvement of professional skills, and offers young journalism students a place for their probationary training.

Educational seminars

Journalists’ Club

A number of journalists of different ages and working for different mass media are the participants of Journalists’ Club. The Club holds meetings every three months in order to discuss topical for Belarusian journalism issues.

Competent Belarusian and foreign experts participate in the meetings presenting their reports on political, economic, social and other themes.

Cycles of workshops

Positive feedback was received also by the cycles of workshops focused on concrete topics: ecological, economic, social journalism, as well as the EU and the Eastern Partnership. The cycles are oriented to young journalists. They are interactive and practice-oriented. The seminars consist of two – three meetings devoted to a particular topic. Their aim is improvement of professional journalistic skills, development of analytical thinking, communication with experts, expansion of contacts both of colleagues and experts.
